Vineyard Notes
We source the Shiraz fruit for this wine from Sandra’s block, located at the southern end of McLaren Vale near the seaside town of Willunga. The soil and geology of this block differ slightly to Chinese Block, with less black Biscay clay and more alluvial Christies Beach formation. This soil type contains rocky fragments that have been sheared off the nearby hills and deposited in this soil millions of years ago. It is free draining, resulting in less vigour over spring and more content vines in the ripening period. This leads to a bright and uplifted wine style whilst retaining signature Mitolo Shiraz softness.
Style
Mitolo delivers wines that express purity of varietal flavour, show elegance of structure with soft tannins whilst being rich, powerful and complex. All the grapes are picked on flavour ripeness which contributes to the soft, ripe tannins and vibrant fruit which is a key characteristic of all Mitolo wines.
Winemaker Notes
Shiraz for Angela is destemmed and crushed gently then pumped over once daily for around ten days. The ferment was kept cool throughout in an attempt to extract the tannin, colour and flavour very softly and to hold onto the pure fruit characters that are a signature for Mitolo. The wine was kept in a combination of new (~10%) and one and two year old barrels, mainly of French origin, for 18 months before being blended. The final blend is clarified by racking only, and bottled without fining or filtration.

Vintage Note
2012 was a fantastic vintage for McLaren Vale, producing deeply flavoured wines with poise and balance. Budburst was early and some inclement weather in flowering led to poor fruit set which resulted in low yields at harvest. Summer saw average temperatures but no heat spikes, and was quite dry. In combination with the low yields this led to harvest being four weeks earlier than the cooler, wetter 2011. Cabernet fruit ripened quickly in February, but a significant rainfall event at the end of the month provided the vines with a much needed drink and freshened the grapes perfectly for harvest at the end of March.

Vintage Note
The 2013 vintage was a great one for Mitolo in McLaren Vale, producing outstanding wines full of bright, fresh flavour and excellent structure. Winter rains were excellent and we began the season with soils at full water capacity, a rare event in recent times. Summer began with mild, but dry conditions, ideal for grape growing, which gave us hope of an outstanding year. The dry conditions continued though, and coupled with a small spike of heat in the second half of February made life a little tough for the vines. Yields were slightly lower than average and coupled with the very dry, warm weather all varieties ripened very quickly, and all at once! Quite unusually the Shiraz was ripe at the same time as our Vermentino and Sangiovese Rose. This made life a little tricky in the winery, with everyone working extremely hard to manage the rapid intake of fruit. We were given some respite however as the a small amount of rain together with some milder weather caused sugar levels in the fruit to plateau for a couple of weeks allowing us to take a bit more time. Overall the quality of the wines is excellent though. The Jester whites and rose are full of flavour with balancing acidity, and ripe at slightly higher sugar levels than previous years. The reds are deeply coloured with excellent structure.

Vintage Note
The 2014 vintage in McLaren Vale was at times a challenging one. Extremes of weather pushed the grapevines to the limit of their tolerance. But in the end the quality of the wines looks outstanding, demonstrating just how hardy grapevines are. Winter rains were very good filling the soil with water ready for the growing season. A windy spring affected fruit set at flowering, ultimately reducing yields at harvest. Post November the rains stopped and the ground quickly dried out. This was exacerbated by multiple extreme heat events including one five-day heat wave in January with temperatures over 40C. And then it rained. On February 14 we received 40mm in one day, almost our entire average summer rainfall, giving the vines much needed reprieve.
