Vineyard Notes
Cantiniere, or the Cellar Master in Italian, is a tribute to a prized blend of our finest barrels from two very distinct single vineyard sites in McLaren Vale, both only kilometres from the cooling breezes of the Gulf St Vincent. Firstly, Lot 10, our 30-year old Cabernet vineyard. The soil here is heavy grey loam mixed with black Biscay clay, a dark and dense cracking soil that delivers vibrant and lush Cabernet with great structure. Secondly, The Chinese Block, which has the same soil composition, delivers an opulent and brooding style of Shiraz, of rich black fruits, olive tapenade, spice and juiceness on the palate. Together they form a seamless, harmonious and unique interpretation of the south western pocket of McLaren Vale.
Style
Mitolo delivers wines that express purity of varietal flavour, show elegance of structure with soft tannins whilst being rich, powerful and complex. All the grapes are picked on flavour ripeness which contributes to the soft, ripe tannins and vibrant fruit which is a key characteristic of all Mitolo wines.

Rosemary-pepper beef rib roast with porcini jus.
The Cantiniere, or cellar master, tended to the wine casks of the affluent families of old Italy. He knew each cask intimately, so that he could choose the best wine for each occasion. Our Cantiniere is a true barrel selection blend, carefully chosen by myself from some of my favourite barrels of the vintage. - Frank Mitolo

Vintage Note

The 2013 vintage was a great one for Mitolo in McLaren Vale, producing outstanding wines full of bright, fresh flavour and excellent structure. Winter rains were excellent and we began the season with soils at full water capacity, a rare event in recent times. Summer began with mild, but dry conditions, ideal for grape growing, which gave us hope of an outstanding year. The dry conditions continued though, and coupled with a small spike of heat in the second half of February made life a little tough for the vines. Yields were slightly lower than average and coupled with the very dry, warm weather all varieties ripened very quickly, and all at once! Quite unusually the Shiraz was ripe at the same time as our Vermentino and Sangiovese Rose. This made life a little tricky in the winery, with everyone working extremely hard to manage the rapid intake of fruit. We were given some respite however as the a small amount of rain together with some milder weather caused sugar levels in the fruit to plateau for a couple of weeks allowing us to take a bit more time. Overall the quality of the wines is excellent though. The Jester whites and rose are full of flavour with balancing acidity, and ripe at slightly higher sugar levels than previous years. The reds are deeply coloured with excellent structure.
