Of the Wind Chardonnay 2023

Story

The name ‘Of the Wind’ is reflective of its Adelaide Hills site where breezes off Lake Alexandrina assert the vineyard’s cool climate.

Tasting Note

Perfumed and layered with stone fruit, honeysuckle and buttered popcorn. A zesty yet supple and silky textured palate of white peach and nectarine, fresh cut pineapple, gooseberry and golden delicious apple. Elements of crème fraiche and subtle dry spices add complexity, while finely balanced acidity carries the wine through the finish.

Vinification

Hand harvested, whole bunch pressed and chilled in tank to 4˚C. Barrel fermented on full solids by wild and inoculated strains in 40% new and 60% seasoned French Oak Hogs Head barrels. 100% malolactic fermentation and 8 months maturation in barrel with regular lees stirring throughout. No finings were used, and sterile filtration was carried out at bottling.

Vineyard

Longview Block 8 Vineyard – Pound Road, Macclesfield, Adelaide Hills.

The cool climate, southern Adelaide Hills Longview Vineyard supplied fruit for the 2023 Of The Wind Chardonnay. The podzolic soil is characterised by shallow sandy loam with ironstone and quartz aggregates over a deep layer of light yellow clay. An elevation of 300 to 350 meters, a southerly aspect and temperatures mediated by southerly breezes off of Lake Alexandrina assert the vineyard’s cool climate and help to retain acidity and fruit purity.
