Story

Primordial gods of the mountains, the Ourea stood atop peaks overlooking vast Mediterranean landscapes, including the town of Montefalco where sagrantino originates. Sourced from the foothills of the Mount Loft Ranges, this wine has all the intensity of these mythical beings.

Tasting Note

Powerful tannins create a very assertive palate, however the core of fruit shines through with blackcurrant, redcurrant and mulberry. Cocoa, clove and mace hints flow through to a very tight acid line and fine wet slate texture, signing off with those signature Sagrantino tannins.

Winemaking

Destemmed and crushed into 2 tonne open top fermenters. Pumped over once or twice daily depending on taste and extraction level of this very tannic variety. Temperatures were kept cool, between 20 and 24˚C to retain fruit vibrancy and aromatics, whilst also helping to keep tannins in balance. After ferment, the wine was pressed to tank and allowed to settle before racking off gross lees into 100% seasoned hogs head barrels, 70% French oak and 30% American oak, for 20 months maturation. Malolactic fermentation was completed by indigenous strains during this time. The final blend is put together without fining and receives only light filtration before bottling.

Vineyard

Lopresti Lot 11 Vineyard - Flour Mill Road, Whites Valley, McLaren Vale.

Located in close proximity to the Gulf St Vincent in the Whites Valley area of McLaren Vale between Willunga and Aldinga. The heavy clay here promotes strong growth in spring but dries out and cracks in summer, pulling back vine vigour as they
approach veraison. The coastal location also allows sea breezes from the Gulf of St Vincent to mediate day time heat during the critical ripening period.
