Here we are in the middle of vintage, crop levels are down, but the quality is incredible, due to a very mild and even summer period. I can safely say that we will now have four vintages in a row that rate among the best. A testament to a little bit of good luck, a good relationship with Mother Nature perhaps, and some outstanding work in the vineyards by our growers Don, Joe & Michael Lopresti.

Today we pick our Sagrantino. We only make about 100 x cases of it, so it's a rare gem, and a variety over time that I believe will find its voice in McLaren Vale. Why I hear you ask? Well, Sagrantino is an Italian varietal indigenous to Umbria, in Central Italy. Renowned for its tannic qualities, of brooding red fruits with notes of plum and earth, it is now finding a home in the Vale. It loves food, and rich pork and wild boar sausages, or a simple antipasti plate.

We release our Sagrantino with a little bit of age, to help soften the tannins. I love its rustic, earthy qualities, the violet aromas, and the spice. We only have a small amount of the 2012 left, as we make way for a new vintage. Mike Bennie gave this wine 93pts, describing it as "spicy, full-bodied and firm in texture. Big red lovers apply here."
