NEW RELEASE

2012 Jester Vermentino

It is with great pleasure that we announce the release of our 2012 Jester Vermentino. This variety, which originally hails from the Italian coastline, is fresh, pure and light: a perfect wine for warm summer days.

Thanks to near perfect vintage conditions, the 2012 Jester Vermentino is slightly different to the first two vintages that we made: it's full of flavour, bursting with passionfruit and citrus blossom. Yet there is a lovely core of acidity and lightness (only 11% alcohol!), making an overall fresh wine that works beautifully with the local seafood of our region. Try this recipe with our 2012 Jester Vermentino:

Asian-Style Salt and Pepper Calamari

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon Sichuan peppercorns
1½ teaspoons Chinese five-spice powder
2 teaspoons sea salt flakes
½ cup (100g) rice flour
12 Calamari, cleaned, bodies cut into rings, tentacles cut to small size
2 eggwhites, lightly beaten
Vegetable oil, for deep-frying
Lemon wedges
Rocket
Balsamic Glaze


Add the peppercorns, five-spice powder and salt to a hot fry pan, stirring, for 1 minute or until fragrant. Place this spice mixture in a small food processor and process to a rough powder. Mix half the spice mixture with the rice flour. Dip the squid in the eggwhite and toss in the spice mixture to coat. Heat the oil in a large frying pan or wok over high heat. Cook the squid, in batches, for 1 minute or until crisp. Drain on absorbent paper and toss with the remaining spice mixture. Serve with the lemon wedges and rocket and balsamic glaze on the side.

2012 Jester Sangiovese Rose

The 2012 vintage was fantastic for us at Mitolo and the Rose certainly is evidence of this. Packed with flavour, it has the trademark qualities of its predecessors: great refreshing acidity and is bone dry. These attributes create versatility for this wine. It is perfect for a glass of wine after work but works equally well when matched with food. We love to drink this wine with a rustic antipasto platter; home made salami, good sharp parmesan and fresh wood oven bread. There is beauty in the simplicity of it all! Get onto this one fast as we sold out of the 2011 quite quickly.

Mitolo Welcomes New Marketing Coordinator

In August 2012 we welcomed a new member to our small Mitolo Wines team, Fleur Runge. Fleur has joined Mitolo to coordinate all sales and marketing activities, and brings with her some fresh ideas from her previous experience in the wine industry.

Fleur comes from Hahndorf Hill Winery in the Adelaide Hills where she looked after distribution for South Australia, as well as cellar door sales and chocolate and wine tastings. Prior to this, Fleur was completing a Bachelor degree in Marketing and Communications at the University of South Australia.

On joining the team Fleur says; “I’m looking forward to working with such a close knit team, familiarising myself with a wonderful new region and injecting some new ideas into the Mitolo brand!” Fleur is excited to be looking after you and is contactable via the details below:

A Note from the Winemaker:

Judging McLaren Vale Wine Show October 2012
 

I was recently fortunate enough to be able to help judge at the McLaren Vale Wine Show. Held at the local Bocce Club, the show involved judging 700+ wines blind over a period of three days. This immense task was overseen by a fantastic selection of judges including chairman Tom Carson of Yabby Lake.

After much (at times heated!) discussion the best wines of show were chosen for the respective trophies. To view the competition results click here

The Bushing Trophy went to a Graciano blend which was quite a surprise! The Grenache and Grenache blends classes were very strong as well as the traditional Shiraz classes, particularly from 2010. Most pleasingly, amongst the whites it was the Italian varieties Fiano and Vermentino that were the stand outs. A big boost for us indeed as we have championed Vermentino for several years now.
